David Johnstone is the Managing Director and founder of Your Equipment Solutions (YES Hire), a dynamic and customer-driven Plant & Tool Hire company serving customers across mainland Scotland.  With a career in the hire industry spanning over three decades, David’s journey began in 1988 as a Trainee Hire Controller with HSS Hire. Over the next 23 years, he built a successful and well-rounded career, progressing through senior roles in Area and Regional Management, Sales, Procurement, and ultimately serving as Northern Divisional Managing Director.

Driven by a long-held ambition to start his own business, David founded YES Hire in 2011 with just four team members. Since then, under his leadership, the company has experienced remarkable growth—expanding its market presence, relocating and expanding its Falkirk base four times, and opening a second depot in Dundee, which has also moved to larger premises to meet growing demand.

Today, YES employs 38 people, with many of David’s own family members, proudly working across the business. That family spirit remains a cornerstone of the company culture.

In 2022, YES transitioned into an Employee-Owned Trust (EOT), a move that reflects David’s deep commitment to empowering his team and ensuring long-term sustainability. The company remains proudly rooted in its core family values and strong sense of community, actively supporting local initiatives including football foundations and youth development.

David continues to lead YES Hire with a clear vision: to provide customers with “what they want, when they want it, at a fair price”—a principle that has guided the company from day one and continues to underpin its success and goals.
